Jew for Sayle: Alexei’s Bid to Become UK’s Number One Self-Hating Jew

Harold Pinter’s body may only just have stiffened, but an unsavoury tussle is already underway for his ignoble position, as The UK’s Number One Self-Hating Jew. At a news conference in London, yesterday – calling for an end to Israel’s right to defend itself – author and comedian Alexei Sayle staked his claim for the much coveted crown, branding Israel a “murderer”, “rapist” and “bully”.

Other participants in the conference, George “saluter of Saddam” Galloway and Ken “you are just like a concentration camp guard” Livingstone, might also have had good claims for the title . . . if only they had been Jewish (let’s be thankful for small mercies). Ex-Eurythmics (now fading) star, Annie Lennox, meanwhile, can perhaps be excused for her anti-Israeli stance, having been married to one; while listening to Bianca Jagger’s platitudes made it clear why it was so important for her to keep her ex-husband’s name. What an odd gathering of rogues and lightweights!

In 1995, I saw Alexei Sayle in a stand-up performance in his home city of Liverpool. It was one of the funniest evenings of my life. I also enjoy his absurd, surreal writing. But when it comes to Israel, the 56-year old does all Jews, but especially those in the UK, a grave disservice.

alexei-sayle2“I want to feel proud of Israel, I want to be proud of my people, but I am ashamed”, Sayle duped reporters yesterday. Rather than touting his wares for “weddings and bar mitzvahs” (like less celebrated Jewish artists), Sayle – who has never been known to show even the slightest interest in Judaism or his Jewishness – hires, or rather sells, himself out as an “Israel basher”.

In fact, the Jewishness of Sayle, Pinter and their ilk would appear to be defined purely by a pathological hatred of Israel, and a willingness to be used by the enemies of both Jews and Israel (very often one and the same). (For the distinction I draw between a self-hating Jew and a Jew-hater, see my earlier post on the Death of Harold Pinter.)

Sayle should know that he has sunk to the very lowest depths when even many Arab states, hardly lovers of Israel, have expressed their understanding of (if not support for) Israel’s actions against Hamas.

The possible causes of such self-loathing are worthy of a dedicated post, but Sayle’s parents were ardent Communists, beliefs that probably alienated them from, and perhaps turned them against, Liverpool’s Jewish community. Alexei, too, joined the Communist Party. But where does a Jew in name alone get the arrogance, presumption and self-importance to state, as Sayle did yesterday, that “it’s important that Jewish people who have a public profile . . . speak out to say that this is not being done in our name”?

Whether or not “Israel has an idea of itself as being noble” or “the good guy”, as Sayle claims, the fact remains that it is (especially when compared to every single Islamic or Arab regime) – even in the midst of a hugely complicated and dangerous operation, Israel is permitting humanitarian aid to enter Gaza and warning civilians to evacuate targets of impending attacks. It is unimaginable that any Palestinian faction (never mind Hamas) would have done the same, if the roles had been reversed.

Sayle then embarked on a course in kindergarten psychology: “what you do is you blame the people that you’ve killed and you hear all the time from Israeli spokespeople that they are angry with the people they have murdered for making them murder them . . . it is the psychology of the murderer, it is the psychology of the rapist, it is the psychology of the bully. That’s what Israel is in this situation.”

A few questions, Mr. Sayle . . .

  • In the eight years since they began, have you even once spoken out against the rocket attacks on Israeli civilians, and said that they had to stop? And what about the suicide bombings before them?
  • Why do you, especially as a Jew, appear to view Israeli blood as cheaper than Palestinian?
  • Have you ever once, as the left-wing intellectual that you appear to consider yourself, criticised, inter alia, the homophobic or sexist policies of Hamas, or those of other Islamic or Arab regimes?
  • And have you ever been to Israel, the country that you claim you “want to feel proud of”?

Should you have the integrity and courage to examine the self-loathing, Muslim-pandering bed that you have made for yourself, I invite you to visit Israel as my guest. I will take you down to Sderot and Ashkelon, to meet some of “[your] people”, who have been living in a continual state of fear during eight years of Palestinian rocket attacks. I will also take you to meet some of the thousands of victims of Palestinian terror, and to some of the families of the thousands more who are no longer here to tell their stories.

It would certainly make for an interesting BBC documentary.

Perhaps, then, Mr. Sayle, you would no longer be “ashamed”. On second thoughts, you probably still would . . . but only because you have been such a fool.

  1. Nice one Mike.

  2. Why should Sayle be either forced to or obligated to support Israel, or more specifically the policies of the current government? How could it be a democracy if everyone was expected to support the current governement? That would be blind loyalty, something which has been very useful for many dreadful governments and wrongdoers in the past. These are just politicians, with opinions and policies….. and the politicians who benefit from this blind loyalty couldn’t do so without the work of people like you, their foot soldiers who attack anyone who dares speak out, bullying them – trying to shame them or call they traitors or self-hating. Open YOUR eyes and respect people’s right to an opinion. Attack the opinion, not the person and stop being a coward.

  3. ” George “saluter of Saddam” Galloway and Ken “you are just like a concentration camp guard” Livingstone….Ex-Eurythmics (now fading) star, Annie Lennox….Bianca Jagger.. made it clear why it was so important for her to keep her ex-husband’s name ”

Ooh, you’re so angry! And what stunning arguments against them! If you didn’t make it personal, your arguments might be taken more seriously. You sound like a blind parent who can’t handle someone criticising their child.

  4. Hi Achilles,

    Thank you for commenting.

Of course Alexei Sayle should not “be either forced to or obligated to support Israel” (nor should Harold Pinter have been). The point of my post (it seems you can’t see past the cynicism) was to look at why Sayle always appears to feel “forced” or “obligated” to criticise Israel. What are his motives? Israel cannot always be in the wrong, can it? Why does he never criticise the other side? All of this, in my opinion, calls his motives into question.

Of course Sayle has a “right to an opinion”. But so do I. And so do most Jews who are not ashamed to be Jews, and who don’t always use their Jewishness and fame to damage Israel and, as a consequence, other Jews.

The use of “personalities” (especially the rogues regularly wheeled out) by anti-Zionists and/or Semites by definition brings in a “personal” aspect, which I am entitled to address. And I will again.

If you re-read my post and ask yourself the same questions I ask, you just might get a little understanding of the contempt most Jews (especially in the current climate) have for the “Sayles” and “Pinters” of this world: Is Israel always in the wrong in its battle with radical Islam? If not, why do the “Sayles” and “Pinters” only ever criticise it? Why do they never criticise the other side?

How do YOU explain it, Achilles?

  5. ” why Sayle always appears to feel forced or obligated to criticise Israel. ”

Because it’s something he feels strongly about. He is a Jew and believes in the concept of Israel and as a Jew feels strongly about what is being done in his name and in the name of all Jews.

“Why does he never criticise the other side? ”

Touché – back at you. If you feel strongly about an argument, you will feel confident that the ‘other side’ is already well represented.

” in my opinion, calls his motives into question.”

Which is just a personal swipe, and nothing to do with the argument. It’s the standard response to anyone whose arguments you (as you put it for others) “can’t be bothered ” to argue against.

” Of course Sayle has a “right to an opinion”….. And so do most Jews who are not ashamed to be Jews ”

Yet, his right is tempered by your right to try to question some ulterior motive rather than face up to the fact that he believes it from his heart. It’s uncomfortable that someone who ought to support Israel finds it impossible to do so, but don’t assume he’s crazy (which is the logic used to avoid stoning to death those who aren’t shomer shabbat!).

The use of “personalities” ……brings in a “personal” aspect, which I am entitled to address.

When it’s Bianca Jagger etc., then I blame the media. It’s insulting to the public that the media think we’ll only pay attention to news when it involves a “celebrity” but then again a lot of the public only respond to that kind of news so maybe we only have ourselves to blame. However, when it’s Sayle, it’s actually positive to show that all Jews are not blindly loyal to whatever policy the Israeli government has today. Israel is not the current Israeli government and it’s perfectly legitimate to support one and not the other.

” most Jews (especially in the current climate) have for the Sayles and Pinters of this world ”

Melchett Mike speaks for himself; others can get their own blog.

  6. Of course I “speak for [my]self”, Achilles. Who else should I speak for?

I gave you the opportunity to really think about, and respond intelligently to, my post. But you spurned it.

You’re the weakest link, Achilles (if ever there was a fitting soubriquet!) . . . goodbye.

  7. Achilles, you write of Sayle’s criticisms of israel: “Because it’s something he feels strongly about. He is a Jew and believes in the concept of Israel and as a Jew feels strongly about what is being done in his name and in the name of all Jews.” If that’s true, then it is commendable. It means he cares about his people and what is happening in their homeland.
In my opinion, there is something else going on. Just about every Jew I know has a strong opinion about Israel. But they also have strong opinions about Hamas, Iran and other relevant parties. I think that’s the point melchett mike is trying to make. And what’s the big deal if he is angry when he makes it? i don’t get that.
Also, you write: “However, when it’s Sayle, it’s actually positive to show that all Jews are not blindly loyal to whatever policy the Israeli government has today. Israel is not the current Israeli government and it’s perfectly legitimate to support one and not the other.” Has Sayle ever publicly supported any Israeli government or action? If not, then perhaps melchett mike is onto something.

  8. Add Sir Gerald Kaufman, the a*se licking Muslim and Asian constituent appeaser, to your list of sad little self-hating Jews.

“My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza.”

  9. i was always a fan of Mr Sayle from being 12 or 13 in 1983 i always watched hes shows. Was i sorry for all that on the day of the first anti-Israel march of the year with all those swastikas and al qaida flags marching in my capital city! But to hear Alexei Sayle openly telling a blatant lie about the ‘poor people of gaza living under 40 years of constant Israel military barrages’ – i felt sick with rage! What a sickener – what a sick minded self hating individual Alexei Sayle truly is. And then to immediatley realise his Jewishness my rage turned to sadness. I myself am not Jewish but if i was – i’d be proud to be Jewish and proud of Israel being the worlds only Jewish state fighting for it’s very survival since the day it was born. As for Alexei Sayle – i’am deeply ashamed to be a former fan. For that lie alone on BBC news – he should be brought to account for his slanderous attack, and investigated. As i’am sure we will find much more.

  10. Samir S. Halabi

Renegade Jews like Alexei Sayle & all the other so called Jews who arse-lick the Muslim-Arab cause against Israel should all be banned for life of ever visiting Israel. Why are they so stupid in their rational as to think that they will be accepted into the bosom of their ‘Gentile’ Anti-Israel buddies who’s only wish is to witness the destruction of ‘The State of Israel’ which would be replaced by another fanatical anti-western Islamic-Republic. So-called-Jews such as Sayle & Co. have no idea what it was like for the jews of the Arab-World who numbered more or less one-million in the late 1940s to have been made victims, scapegoats, suffering torture, rape, murder, to dispossessed of all their real-estate etc. ie. businesses, homes, Jewellery, bank accounts frozen, stolen etc, being forced to flee their arab homelands.

Don’t these ignorant renagade-Jews have any feeling compassion towards their fellow brother Jews from the arab-lands whom treated worse than dogs by their arab fellow citizens. Why is their only compassion by these Jews for the arab-refugees of the former British-Mandate-of-Palestine, when in reality the Jewish exodus from the arab-world was far greater in numbers almost two to one as well as the financial loss which runs into the billions of dollars today, the land that we the jews of the arab world owned was five times greater than the whole of Israel today.

  11. He was on bbc Question Time a few months ago . He was painfully out of his depth .He came across as a 24 carat moron .

  12. Haven’t got time just now to contribute to this properly Mike – just to say well done for this post – spot-on as usual – and also for an excellent dismantling of our oh-so-smug ‘Greek hero’ friend’s “arguments” who seems to have some kind of anti-mm agenda.
